The Punjab government has started purchasing electric vehicles (EVs) for its officials as part of its eco-friendly transport drive. The Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) inspected EV models today, with Proton Saga presenting its version, reviewed by Additional Secretary Transport Zahid Manzoor. A government spokesperson confirmed that the procurement process will be finalized soon, aiming to promote sustainable mobility and reduce environmental impact in the province.
Earlier, Punjab launched an E-Taxi Pilot Project in Lahore, introducing 1,100 electric taxis into the city’s transport system to curb air pollution. Of these, 1,000 e-taxis will go to fleet owners, with a minimum requirement of 10 vehicles per fleet, while 100 will be allocated to individuals through Transport Network Companies (TNCs). Among these, 70 taxis are reserved for men and 30 for women.
To support adoption, the government has offered interest-free loans for five years, equity contributions of 30%–60%, and a waiver of vehicle registration fees. Each e-taxi will include safety features such as trackers and panic buttons, along with warranties of up to 300,000 km or six years. The maximum financing limit is set at Rs6.5 million per vehicle, with buyers covering costs above that cap.
