The Punjab government has enacted new legislation to regulate the keeping and trade of pet parrots, aiming to curb illegal sales and safeguard exotic species like the Alexandrine Parakeet.
Under the law, Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Slaty-headed, and Plum-headed parrots have been added to the registration system’s second schedule. A registration fee of Rs1,000 will apply for each parrot.
Parrot owners are now required to register as licensed breeders or dealers, while buying and selling will only be allowed through approved dealers. Breeders are categorized into small breeders, who keep limited parrots, and large breeders involved in commercial breeding and trading.
According to Wildlife Department officials, the law seeks to protect native parrot species, curb smuggling, and regulate breeding within a legal framework. The regulation takes effect immediately, and violators will face legal action.
The move is being welcomed as a significant step toward wildlife conservation in Punjab, promoting responsible ownership and the protection of endangered parrot species.
