Air pollution blankets Punjab as winter begins

As winter arrives, thick smog has engulfed major cities across Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas has reached hazardous levels, making the air unsafe to breathe.

Lahore has once again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities, with citizens reporting breathing problems and eye irritation.

Experts blame a combination of factors — vehicle emissions, crop burning, and industrial smoke — for the toxic air. Cold weather and low wind speed have worsened the situation, trapping pollutants closer to the ground.

Schools and offices have issued health advisories, while the government has deployed anti-smog teams and is urging people to wear masks.

Environmental groups warn that if urgent measures aren’t taken, Punjab could face a full-blown health crisis. Doctors are advising citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, especially children and the elderly, who are at higher risk.
