Despite fresh reforms, citizens are still dealing with problems linked to underage driving and road safety, even as Punjab Traffic Police rolls out new regulatory steps. The issue of teenage riders operating vehicles without proper documentation has remained a serious concern for parents, lawmakers, and traffic authorities.
In response to ongoing debates, Punjab Traffic Police began issuing a special driving license permit to teenagers aged 16 to 18 from March 1, 2026. The move represents a major shift in policy, aiming to bring young drivers into a structured legal system instead of leaving them exposed to fines, penalties, and road accidents. The decision has received mixed reactions, with some praising it as practical reform while others question its safety implications.
To obtain this limited driving license permit, applicants must pass a road skills test and a traffic sign recognition exam. They are also required to provide written consent from a parent or guardian and submit a fee of Rs. 500. Authorities have placed clear restrictions on the permit: holders are only allowed to ride motorcycles up to 125cc or low-powered electric bikes. The permit automatically expires once the individual turns 18, at which point applying for a regular driving license becomes compulsory.
The initiative follows approval from the Punjab Cabinet earlier this year. Officials are also reviewing proposals to expand similar driving license rules to small cars in the future. The main objective is to regulate young riders under an official framework that encourages responsibility, improves compliance with traffic laws, and enhances overall road safety across the province.
