Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is not serious about engaging in dialogue with the government. Speaking to media, he said PTI leadership is interested only in holding talks with the country’s establishment, rather than elected representatives, which he termed harmful for democratic norms and parliamentary traditions.
Khawaja Asif said the government has repeatedly expressed willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue to reduce political tensions. However, he alleged PTI continues to avoid formal political engagement. According to him, PTI’s preference for non-political channels reflects a lack of trust in democratic institutions and weakens the role of parliament.
The defence minister said political issues must be resolved through political means, including dialogue between parties within the constitutional framework. He stressed that bypassing the government and parliament sets a dangerous precedent. Asif added that democracy cannot function properly if political forces refuse to recognise elected leadership.
Commenting on PTI’s internal situation, Khawaja Asif said the party appears divided on its strategy. He claimed some PTI leaders privately support talks with the government, but public statements suggest otherwise. He also accused the party of using pressure tactics instead of constructive engagement to achieve political objectives.
Asif further said the government has taken steps to stabilise the economy and improve governance, despite political challenges. He added that cooperation from all political stakeholders is necessary for long-term stability. According to him, continuous confrontation only creates uncertainty, affecting public confidence and economic recovery.
The defence minister urged PTI to reconsider its approach and engage in dialogue through constitutional forums. He said political maturity demands negotiations with elected governments, not behind-the-scenes discussions. Khawaja Asif maintained that national interests should come before political point-scoring and urged all parties to strengthen democratic processes.
