Islamabad — The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strict warning to social media users across the country, urging citizens to refrain from sharing illegal content on social media platforms and to adopt responsible online behaviour under national laws. The alert highlights legal repercussions and the importance of digital safety in today’s connected world.
In its official statement, the PTA underscored that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it must not be misused to spread unlawful, immoral or harmful material online. This includes content violating the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, such as blasphemous, anti-state, or obscene material.
To support this push for responsible digital conduct, the authority has encouraged users to report unlawful content promptly — either directly through social platforms’ complaint tools or via the PTA’s online Complaint Management System (CMS) and mobile app, which facilitate quick escalation and removal of harmful posts.
Integrating digital conduct guidelines into everyday use, the PTA has also laid out broader rules that promote lawful online interaction. For example, earlier this year the telecom regulator shared detailed advice on responsible SIM and telecom use, reminding users to comply with all relevant regulations to avoid facilitating illegal activities.
Authorities have stressed public cooperation in identifying and flagging unlawful material, especially content that could incite hatred, undermine national security, or offend public sentiment. Under PECA provisions, users disseminating illegal material may face penalties, including fines or legal action.
The PTA’s campaign against illegal online content comes amidst ongoing efforts to enforce safer digital spaces in Pakistan, as tech platforms continue to grapple with balancing freedoms and regulations. Citizens are being urged to stay informed about content standards and to take an active role in reporting violations.
