PTA Considers Removing Tax on Mobile Phones in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is reportedly considering proposals to remove or reduce taxes on mobile phones to make devices more affordable for consumers.

Officials say the measure aims to boost smartphone penetration, encourage digital connectivity, and support growth in the telecom sector.

High import duties and taxes have long made smartphones expensive in Pakistan, limiting access for many users and slowing technology adoption.

Industry representatives have welcomed the potential move, saying it could stimulate sales, attract foreign investment, and create jobs in related sectors.

Consumer advocacy groups argue that removing the tax would benefit low-income families, allowing more people to access internet services and digital platforms.

The PTA is expected to consult with the Ministry of Finance and telecom stakeholders before announcing a final decision, which could be implemented soon.
