ISLAMABAD – PTA Chairman Major Gen (retd) Hafeezur Rehman confirmed on Tuesday that discussions are underway regarding the registration of Elon Musk’s Starlink in Pakistan. A PTA spokesperson noted that the Starlink team met with Rehman during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, where they focused on enhancing digital connectivity, refining regulatory frameworks, and improving broadband access in remote regions.

Rehman stressed that registering with the satellite regulatory authority is essential for obtaining a license, underlining the importance of modern technology for national connectivity. Earlier in January, it was reported that the federal government planned to hire a consultant to finalize regulations for Starlink’s satellite-based internet services. This initiative was part of a meeting led by Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, aimed at advancing satellite connectivity.
The session also included representatives from SUPARCO, the PTA, and the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board, who discussed Starlink’s licensing, the progress of regulatory reforms, and the development of a framework for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. A decision was made to engage a consultant to support the licensing process for Starlink and other LEO satellites, ensuring that Pakistan’s satellite policies align with international standards and boost connectivity.
The IT Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to establishing a robust regulatory framework for satellite technology. This meeting comes on the heels of confirmation by the state minister that Starlink is already registered with the Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). “The space board authority is examining various technical aspects, and we have communicated this to Starlink,” said Khawaja.
