Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has proposed a daily allowance of only Rs 400 for national hockey players. The proposal comes ahead of the upcoming season and Pakistan’s participation in the FIH Pro League.
Currently, hockey players receive around USD 100 per day (roughly Rs 28,000) for international events and Rs 3,000 for domestic competitions. Veteran players have criticized the PSB’s proposal as insulting and insufficient for professional athletes.
“Rs 400 per day is humiliating for players who represent the country internationally,” said one senior hockey player. Many athletes are also awaiting pending payments from previous tournaments, increasing their frustration.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has distanced itself from the PSB’s plan. PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid stated the federation already provides USD 100 daily allowances. He called the PSB proposal impractical and unlikely to motivate top players.
The dispute between PSB and PHF revolves around alleged misuse of funds. While both organizations remain at odds, it is the hockey players who bear the consequences, facing low compensation and uncertainty ahead of major events.
Experts say this financial controversy highlights deeper issues in Pakistan hockey. The sport, once dominant internationally, struggles due to mismanagement and limited support for its athletes. Observers warn that low allowances could impact team morale and performance in upcoming competitions.
The FIH Pro League offers a chance for Pakistan to regain its international standing, but without fair compensation for hockey players, fielding a strong team may remain challenging. Authorities are urged to resolve the allowance dispute promptly to ensure athletes can focus on training and competition.
