Aga Khan IV Passes Away, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Designated 50th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has officially announced the passing of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the beloved 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, at the age of 88 on February 4, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal. His passing marks the end of a nearly seven-decade leadership, during which he was highly regarded for his global philanthropic efforts and commitment to education, social progress, and economic development.

As per Ismaili tradition, following the reading of his will, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini has been named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili community. Prince Rahim, born on October 12, 1971, is the eldest son of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV and his first wife, Princess Salimah, a British former model. The transition marks the continuity of the spiritual leadership of the Ismaili community.
Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini, who has been deeply involved with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), serves as the chairman of its Environment and Climate Committee. His responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the Institute of Ismaili Studies and the social governance organizations of the Ismaili community. He also holds significant roles on the boards of various AKDN entities.
The Ismaili community, which is made up of around 15 million members spread across North America, Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, believes that the Aga Khan is a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through Hazrat Ali and Fatima, the Prophet’s daughter.
Prince Karim Aga Khan IV’s leadership was transformative, promoting the welfare of his people globally, and his passing leaves a legacy of philanthropy and advancement that continues through his son’s ascension as the new Imam.
