UAE to Implement Mandatory Genetic Testing for All Citizens Planning to Marry
Starting January 2025, mandatory genetic testing will be introduced for all UAE citizens planning to marry, as part of the premarital screening program. Previously, while premarital medical examinations were required for both citizens and residents, genetic testing was only optional. This new measure follows a decision by the Emirates Genome Council, which was approved during the UAE government’s annual meetings.

Genetic testing can identify over 570 genetic mutations linked to various hereditary conditions, including cardiomyopathy, genetic epilepsy, spinal muscular atrophy, hearing loss, cystic fibrosis, and other chronic or severe illnesses that are difficult to treat.
The initiative aims to establish a comprehensive national genetic database, which will aid in the early detection of genetic disorders among Emiratis and support timely medical intervention.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention views this as a significant step forward in the UAE’s healthcare system, aligning with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071. This initiative not only aims to improve the quality of life but also promotes sustainable development.
The Ministry has confirmed that all relevant stakeholders, including medical staff, specialized expertise, guidelines, and technical infrastructure, are already in place as part of the National Genome Strategy, to ensure the success of this groundbreaking program.
