India made history on Saturday, September 21, as they secured their first-ever gold medal in the Open Section of the Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest. Key players, including young talents Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh, played pivotal roles in this victory.

Grandmaster D Gukesh, who is set to play in the World Championship match in Singapore this November, led India’s charge by defeating Fabiano Caruana of the United States, one of the world’s top players, in a thrilling game.

In a tense encounter, Gukesh employed the Catalan opening and gradually turned the game in his favor by grabbing a pawn during the middle game.
