Police Assaulted Amid Azad Kashmir Protests; Prime Minister Orders Inquiry

Violence broke out in Azad Kashmir after protesters allegedly attacked police, snatched their weapons, and opened fire. Several police residences were also targeted, and belongings were set on fire.

According to officials, the unrest began when protesters forcibly seized weapons from law enforcement personnel. The attackers then fired on police, leaving multiple officers injured. Despite restrictions, some demonstrators climbed mountains to expand their protest, intensifying the situation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the violence and expressed concern over the events in Azad Kashmir. He said that peaceful protest is the right of every citizen but warned against actions that harm public order. The prime minister ordered a transparent investigation into the clashes and directed immediate assistance for the families of those affected.

Sharif also announced the expansion of the government’s negotiation committee. The new team includes senior leaders such as Rana Sanaullah, Ahsan Iqbal, Masood Khan, and Qamar Zaman Kaira. The committee has been directed to travel to Muzaffarabad, meet stakeholders, and propose a lasting solution to the crisis.

The Azad Kashmir government later confirmed that six civilians and three policemen were killed during violent protests in Dhirkot. More than 100 policemen were injured, including twelve in critical condition, while around 50 civilians also sustained injuries.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif appealed for calm and urged protesters to remain peaceful. He reminded citizens of the long sacrifices made by people in occupied Kashmir and stressed that Pakistan continues to stand for their freedom.

Authorities released details of the martyred policemen, including Constables Khurshid and Jamil from Bagh, and Constable Tahir Rafi from Muzaffarabad. Families of the slain officers have demanded strict punishment for those responsible.

Officials have urged the public to avoid misinformation spread on social media and assured that efforts are underway to restore peace in Azad Kashmir.
