Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has written to U.S. President Joe Biden, requesting clemency for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who has been imprisoned in the U.S. for years.
This was disclosed during a hearing in the Islamabad High Court, where Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan reviewed a petition from Fauzia Siddiqui, seeking Aafia’s release and repatriation. Additional Attorney General Manzoor Iqbal informed the court that the Pakistani government had formally appealed to the U.S. President for clemency, with the letter written by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Earlier, Aafia’s lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, revealed she had been subjected to ongoing sexual abuse in the Fort Worth, Texas prison. He reported that Siddiqui, serving an 86-year sentence, had faced continued sexual harassment, including a recent incident involving alleged rape by a security guard as punishment. Smith confirmed the abuse had not ceased.
