Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review reforms in Pakistan’s power sector. The meeting focused on privatization, modernization, and improving overall efficiency. Senior ministers and officials attended the session.
PM Shehbaz reviewed the progress of the power sector roadmap in detail. Officials briefed him on ongoing and planned reforms. The Prime Minister stressed the need for urgent action. He said energy reforms are vital for economic stability.
He directed authorities to speed up the privatization of power companies. This includes power distribution companies, known as DISCOs. Power generation companies, or GENCOs, are also part of the plan. PM Shehbaz said privatization will help create a competitive electricity market. He noted that competition is key to resolving long-term energy issues.
The Prime Minister also focused on the transmission system. He ordered that modernization plans be finalized quickly. He said the electricity network must meet modern standards. He highlighted the importance of reducing losses and improving reliability.
A major point discussed was the battery energy storage system. The Prime Minister supported its early implementation. He said such systems can strengthen grid stability. He also called for public-private partnerships in the energy sector. This approach aims to attract private investment and expertise.
Officials shared updates on the privatization process. Work is underway for Faisalabad, Islamabad, and Gujranwala DISCOs. Authorities expect expressions of interest to be published soon. This marks an important step in the reform process.
The meeting also reviewed major infrastructure projects. The PC-1 for the 500 kV Ghazi Brotha–Faisalabad transmission line is in the approval stage. Technical studies have been completed for shifting imported coal plants to Thar coal. This move aims to reduce fuel costs.
Construction of a railway line for coal transport to Thar-based plants is ongoing. Officials said this will support local energy resources. Updates were also shared on the competition-based electricity market. Authorities reported a reduction in line losses compared to last year.
The concept clearance for the battery storage system has been approved. Feasibility studies are currently in progress. Federal ministers, advisers, and senior officials attended the meeting.
