PM Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday called for the full implementation of the National Tariff Policy, describing it as a “revolutionary step” to strengthen Pakistan’s industrial sector.
Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz discussed recommendations from the Sub-Working Group on customs, tariff, and trade reforms. He emphasized that the policy is designed to boost domestic industrial production and make Pakistani businesses more competitive in global markets.
“The National Tariff Policy will increase industrial output and align exports and imports with overall economic growth,” said PM Shehbaz.
During the meeting, industrialists, including Muhammad Ali Tabba, presented sector-specific suggestions. They highlighted challenges in customs and tax collection and provided recommendations for improving industrial growth. The prime minister welcomed their input and instructed relevant ministries to support industrial expansion and provide full assistance to investors.
PM Shehbaz stressed the importance of using factual data when developing reform proposals. He also instructed authorities to closely monitor customs duty collection on bilateral and transit trade to ensure transparency and efficiency.
He pointed out that the Export Development Fund (EDF) has not been fully utilized for research and training. PM Shehbaz noted that sustainable economic growth requires increased investment, higher productivity, and reduced production costs.
The meeting was attended by federal ministers, including Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Climate Change Minister Dr. Mosaddiq Malik, Power Minister Sardar Owais Ahmed Leghari, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik, and Minister of State for Finance Azhar Bilal Kayani. Chairman SIFC and representatives of domestic industry and business also participated.
