Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is moving forward with plans to expand its fleet as part of a broader revival strategy. The airline aims to improve operations and restore its position in the aviation sector.
According to Arif Habib, Chairman of the consortium involved in PIA’s revival, efforts are currently focused on restoring grounded aircraft. He stated that several planes are being repaired and prepared for service. Once completed, the active PIA fleet is expected to increase to 26 aircraft.
The long-term plan for PIA is more ambitious. Officials have set a target to expand the fleet to 60 aircraft. This move is seen as a key step in strengthening the airline’s capacity and improving its performance. A larger fleet would allow PIA to operate more routes and enhance connectivity.
Arif Habib also highlighted the importance of economic stability for business growth. He noted that Pakistan’s economy has shown signs of improvement. Better revenue collection, controlled spending, and stable debt management have supported this progress.
However, he stressed that reducing production costs remains essential. High electricity tariffs continue to affect businesses across the country. He explained that capacity charges are one of the main reasons behind high power costs.
Habib suggested that increasing electricity consumption could help lower prices. Pakistan’s transmission system has the capacity to handle over 22,000 megawatts. If fully used, electricity costs could drop by Rs10 to Rs12 per unit. This would benefit industries and support economic growth.
In addition, he called for unity within the business community. He said businesses should set aside political differences and present a united voice. This approach, he added, would help ensure that their concerns are addressed effectively by the government.
Experts believe that sectors like information technology, agriculture, and mining can drive future growth. Strengthening these areas could support the overall economy and create new opportunities.
Meanwhile, industry leaders have also suggested reforms in public sector institutions. They believe that private sector involvement could improve efficiency in organizations facing operational challenges.
