PHC prohibits government resources for political activities

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has banned the use of government resources, vehicles, and staff for political activities, including rallies, protests, and long marches, ruling that such misuse constitutes misconduct and undermines public trust.

The decision came while hearing a writ petition filed by Jawad Ali, with a division bench of Justice Sahibzada Asadullah and Justice Dr. Khurshid Iqbal presiding. The petitioner alleged that the PTI-led Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government had diverted state assets for party events, including official vehicles, and claimed that government workers were treating public resources as personal property.

During proceedings, the provincial government contended that officials participated in political activities using their private resources.

In its judgment, Justice Asadullah noted that misuse of public assets erodes trust, creates administrative difficulties, and violates democratic principles. The court emphasized that public funds cannot support any political party and that administrative officers must ensure government vehicles, staff, and assets are not involved in political events. Misuse may result in disciplinary action, and all departments were directed to strictly enforce the ban.
