Mianwali parents allegedly killed their two-month-old daughter after being displeased with the birth of another girl. The tragic incident occurred in Haranwali village, where the infant was reportedly drowned in a water tank. The father has been arrested, while authorities are still trying to locate the mother. Police confirmed that the father admitted to the act, stating he had hoped for a son and was upset by the birth of a daughter. A case has been registered against the parents under relevant laws.
This horrifying event reflects a broader pattern of gender-based violence in Pakistan. Last year, in Faisalabad, a man allegedly murdered his pregnant wife after learning she was expecting a third daughter. Aiman Fatima, 28, who already had two daughters aged three and one-and-a-half years, was brutally beaten by her husband, Nadeem Sajjad, and his brother, Phool Abbas, after an ultrasound revealed another female child. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Both Nadeem and Phool Abbas were arrested following the incident.
Authorities and human rights advocates stress that such cases underscore the urgent need for awareness and strict enforcement of laws protecting women and girls, highlighting the dangerous consequences of societal preference for male children. These incidents continue to provoke outrage and demand comprehensive measures to address gender bias, prevent domestic violence, and safeguard the rights of female children across the country.
