Pakistani Student's Groundbreaking Research Recognized In Spain

Saba Anwar, a Pakistani doctoral student currently studying in Barcelona, Spain, has received international recognition for her innovative research, earning the prestigious Thesis of the Year award from Barcelona’s esteemed university.

Her research focuses on developing dietary plans for individuals at risk of diabetes and heart diseases. These plans have been adopted by a prominent hospital in Barcelona, Germans Trias I Pujol, to benefit its patients. Notably, Pakistani women, often marginalized in Spanish society, are actively involved in implementing these dietary plans as part of the project.

Originally from Mandi Bahauddin, Pakistan, Saba migrated to Spain with her family at the age of 13. Her research aims to combat obesity, diabetes, and heart problems prevalent among the Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi communities in Spain.

Recognized as the best research of 2021, Saba’s work also secured her victory in a thesis competition at the University of Barcelona last year. Her efforts have garnered attention, particularly given Spain’s significant Pakistani population, where over 100,000 Pakistanis reside, with women comprising more than 30 percent of this demographic. By involving Pakistani women in her project, Saba has empowered them and challenged social norms that previously marginalized their participation in community activities in Spain.
