Pakistan to Launch 5G Services in 7 Key Cities Soon

Pakistan is set to launch 5G services in the coming months, starting with seven major cities, Federal IT and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced Tuesday.

Speaking at the 26th ITCN Asia Expo in Karachi, Khawaja acknowledged the challenges of rolling out 5G but emphasized ongoing efforts to expand nationwide internet access. She noted that while adopting next-generation technology poses financial strains, digital development remains a top priority. The minister highlighted a recent IT-focused agreement with Saudi Arabia to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and boost economic growth.

Khawaja also linked digital progress to broader economic stability, citing improvements in inflation and macroeconomic indicators. She confirmed that Pakistan’s first Artificial Intelligence policy has been approved, with plans to train 500,000 to one million youth in AI and cybersecurity by year-end.

Addressing connectivity issues, she noted recent damage to submarine cables in the Red Sea and assured that the government is working to enhance fiberisation and network reliability. She also reported that recent hacking attempts from India were successfully blocked, keeping government websites secure.
