Pakistan To Receive Two New Submarine Cable Systems Soon

Pakistan is set to enhance its internet infrastructure with the addition of two new Submarine Cable Systems, officials confirmed during a National Assembly committee meeting on Tuesday. The Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, chaired by Syed Aminul Haque, reviewed nationwide connectivity challenges and the progress of digital infrastructure projects, including the Islamabad IT Park.

The committee was briefed on ongoing disruptions caused by a submarine cable fault near Yemen, which has affected internet performance in several regions. To address this, the IT Secretary confirmed that two new Submarine Cable Systems are scheduled to be connected within the next 15 months, aiming to provide stable, high-speed internet across the country.

Officials also reported that the Islamabad IT Park is 80% complete, although the official October 31 deadline has passed. The project has faced delays due to multiple changes in Korean project directors. Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima said the government is working with Korean developers to complete the project and has a backup plan if they withdraw. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an inquiry into the delays to ensure timely completion.

The IT Ministry is also establishing Special Technology Parks across Pakistan, including a women’s technology park in Bagh, Azad Kashmir. Additionally, 50 e-Rozgar centers have been set up to support freelancers and young professionals. Policy reforms, such as the abolition of Right of Way charges, aim to accelerate fiberization, with a target of connecting 60% of telecom towers nationwide.

Connectivity Challenges
Committee members highlighted poor mobile and internet services in smaller towns. Minister Fatima attributed the issues to spectrum congestion, with the country currently using only 274 MHz. The next spectrum auction is expected in early 2026. Members also called for broader expansion of IT infrastructure beyond major cities.
