Pakistan has fallen four spots in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, ranking 144th out of 163 countries, placing it among the world’s least peaceful nations.
The annual index, released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), evaluates peace based on violence, political instability, internal and external conflicts, and societal safety.
Within South Asia, Singapore remained the region’s most peaceful country, holding the 6th spot globally. Other rankings included Bangladesh (123rd), India (115th), Sri Lanka (97th), China (98th), Saudi Arabia (90th), UAE (52nd), and the US (128th).
Analysts point to Pakistan’s political turmoil, regional tensions, and persistent security concerns as key reasons for its decline.
Globally, Iceland topped the list, followed by several European countries, with Portugal (7th), Denmark (8th), Slovenia (9th), and Finland (10th) among the leaders.
At the bottom, Russia (163rd), Ukraine (162nd), Sudan (161st), Congo (160th), Yemen (159th), Afghanistan (158th), and Israel (155th) ranked as the least peaceful.
The GPI remains a key benchmark for measuring peace, with Pakistan’s low standing underscoring the urgent need for reforms, stability measures, and investment in security.
