Health officials in Pakistan are closely monitoring new Mpox cases after signs of possible local transmission emerged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier infections were mostly linked to international travel. However, recent reports suggest the virus may now be spreading within communities.
Since August 2024, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded 28 confirmed Mpox cases. Officials said eight of these cases were reported in 2026. The province has also reported one death linked to the virus.
The latest case was confirmed on April 16. It involved a one-and-a-half-month-old infant. Health experts believe this infection may have been locally transmitted. This has raised concerns about household or close-contact spread.
In the past, most Mpox cases in Pakistan were connected to travelers returning from Gulf countries. Authorities were able to trace many infections to international travel routes. However, some recent patients had no travel history. In several cases, officials could not identify the source of infection.
Experts say this change may indicate local transmission of the virus. They warn that close contact between family members can increase the risk of infection. Health officials are now focusing on stronger surveillance and quicker response measures.
The rise in Mpox cases is not limited to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Similar concerns have appeared in Sindh and Punjab. Sindh reported 25 confirmed infections and nine deaths by mid-April. Officials identified Khairpur as one of the most affected areas in the province.
Punjab has also recorded dozens of Mpox cases in 2026. Several infections were reported in Lahore. Health departments in different provinces are now working together to improve monitoring and public awareness.
The National Institute of Health has increased screening and surveillance efforts across the country. Provincial health authorities are also training medical staff to handle suspected cases more effectively.
