Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a new electric bus service in seven districts of the province, with 77 modern electric buses beginning operations to improve public transport and promote eco-friendly travel.
The new fleet has been deployed in Gujrat, Narowal, Nankana Sahib, Vehari, Lodhran, Sheikhupura, and Kasur. The initiative expands access to modern public transportation beyond Punjab’s major cities and aims to provide residents with a reliable and affordable travel option.
During the inauguration ceremony, officials announced that the fare for the electric bus service has been fixed at Rs20. The flat fare is intended to make the service accessible to daily commuters while encouraging greater use of public transport.
The buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps and include dedicated facilities for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Officials said the fleet has been designed to offer a safe, comfortable, and inclusive travel experience for passengers from all walks of life.
The launch is part of the Punjab government’s broader plan to modernise the province’s public transport network through the introduction of electric vehicles. Authorities believe the project will help reduce carbon emissions, promote clean energy, and improve urban mobility.
Officials added that the electric buses are expected to provide dependable transport services while supporting the province’s environmental goals. The government also aims to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging more people to shift from private vehicles to public transport.
Residents of Gujrat, Narowal, Nankana Sahib, Vehari, Lodhran, Sheikhupura, and Kasur can now travel on the new electric buses at a flat fare of Rs20, making the service one of the most affordable public transport options in Punjab.
The Punjab government has indicated that similar transport initiatives may be expanded to additional districts in the future as part of ongoing efforts to improve connectivity and modernise public transportation across the province.
