Pakistan Rejects India’s IMF Intervention Amid Growing Tensions

Pakistan has firmly dismissed India’s request to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to review Islamabad’s financial support programme, labelling it a politically charged move amid worsening regional strains following the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

A senior adviser to Pakistan’s finance ministry confirmed that the country’s $7 billion IMF bailout remains firmly on track, alongside an additional $1.3 billion in climate resilience funding secured in March 2025. Finance adviser Khurram Schehzad emphasised that the programme is stabilising Pakistan’s economy and boosting investor confidence, with recent IMF reviews and global financial engagements proceeding smoothly.

Indian efforts to influence the IMF come as tensions escalate between the two neighbours, with reciprocal treaty suspensions, airspace closures, and diplomatic expulsions deepening the standoff. Islamabad has rejected New Delhi’s allegations regarding the Pahalgam attack and has called for an impartial international investigation.

Pakistani officials argue that India’s IMF manoeuvre is an attempt to diplomatically isolate Pakistan. The IMF and India’s finance ministry have yet to publicly respond. Meanwhile, global leaders, including US Vice President JD Vance, have urged restraint to avoid military escalation.
