Temperatures in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are projected to soar 6°C above average this week, according to the official GLOF alert notification. A rain-bearing system is also forecast in the next week.
These conditions may result in increased river inflows and a considerable GLOF danger, as well as flash floods, in the vulnerable glaciated areas of GB and KP.

It is strongly urged that the district government, relevant local organisations, and local populations remain watchful and take preventive steps, particularly during Eid-ul-Azha. In the aforementioned places, it is critical to prioritise safety and be prepared for probable GLOF and flash flood events.
Glacial lake outburst floods occur when water accumulates in glacial lakes, causing a massive volume of water, debris, and rock to be released suddenly. These incidents endanger adjacent residents, infrastructure, and the environment.
The PMD alert serves as a timely reminder to authorities to prioritise safety and put in place appropriate disaster response measures. The risk of GLOFs is predicted to increase as climate change continues to influence glacial regions, necessitating actions to protect sensitive places.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
