In a major step toward building a safer and more unified identity system, the federal government has approved wide-ranging reforms to the National Identity Card and Pakistan Origin Card under the “One Nation – One Identity” program.
The new system aims to enhance digital protection, simplify identity verification, and make public services more accessible. Officials stated that the reforms include advanced verification methods, improved biometric security, and stronger safeguards to stop identity fraud and misuse.
A key highlight of the changes is the official introduction of Quick Response (QR) codes on identity documents. The QR-enabled feature will allow quicker and more secure verification, improving the reliability of identification across institutions.
Authorities are also introducing a single, standardized identity card format. This will end the previous system of chip-based and non-chip cards, ensuring that all citizens carry one uniform card equipped with modern security features.
The updated rules further tighten anti-fraud measures. If an identity card is blocked or suspended, all related verification and authentication services will be instantly deactivated. This step is meant to stop suspended cards from being used for digital transactions or official verification.
According to the government, these reforms represent a major move toward establishing a modern, integrated, and technology-driven national identity framework across Pakistan
