Pakistan Imposes Fines On 6 Catering Firms For Hajj Service Lapses

The Pakistan Hajj Mission (PHM) has fined six catering companies a total of SAR 263,580 ($71,000) for failing to meet meal service standards for Pakistani pilgrims in Makkah, as reported on Tuesday.

PHM has engaged nine catering firms to cater to approximately 70,105 pilgrims participating in Hajj under the government’s scheme this year. Since May 9, more than 55,990 pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia on 217 flights.

With a Hajj quota of 179,210 pilgrims this year, about 70,000 will travel through the government scheme, while the remainder will utilize private tour operators.

The fines were primarily imposed for contractual breaches in ensuring that pilgrims receive clean, timely meals without disruptions, PHM officials informed the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

PHM rigorously monitors food hygiene and quality to ensure punctual meal delivery. Catering companies were selected through a transparent and competitive bidding process to provide safe and nutritious food to pilgrims. The selection of caterers commenced last November following federal approval to offer quality food at SAR 35 per person per day.

PHM officials stated that food coordinators continuously oversee food preparation and kitchen operations, with rigorous checks on food quality and quantity upon arrival at pilgrim accommodations. The daily menu comprises Pakistani and continental cuisines, with flexible serving times to prevent congestion.

A feedback mechanism, including a digital app, has resolved 506 food-related complaints, with manual complaints also being addressed. Additionally, a 400-member Pakistan Hajj Medical Mission (PHMM) is present, and Pakistan has established two hospitals and 11 dispensaries in Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah for pilgrim healthcare.

This year’s Hajj pilgrimage is scheduled from June 14-19, with Pakistan’s pre-Hajj flight operation ongoing until June 9.
