Over 21,000 Pakistanis Currently Imprisoned Across 12 Countries

More than 21,600 Pakistanis are currently imprisoned in foreign countries, according to a written statement submitted by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in the National Assembly. The prisoners face a range of charges, including immigration violations, drug offences, and other criminal cases. Thousands of them are still awaiting trial.

Saudi Arabia holds the largest number of imprisoned Pakistanis, with 10,745 nationals detained for illegal border crossings and drug-related offences. Many are serving their sentences, while others remain on trial. India currently has 738 Pakistanis imprisoned, although the authorities have not shared specific details regarding the charges.

The United States holds 141 Pakistanis in custody under various legal cases. In the United Arab Emirates, 5,297 Pakistanis are imprisoned, but no detailed information has been provided about the nature of their alleged offences. China has 652 Pakistanis facing trial, mainly for drug trafficking, fake currency, fraud, and immigration violations.

Other countries detaining Pakistani nationals include Qatar (599), Oman (578), Malaysia (444), Italy (353), Bahrain (218), Turkey (190), and Afghanistan (91).

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar informed lawmakers that 13,078 Pakistanis imprisoned abroad are still under trial, while 8,569 have already been convicted by foreign courts. The statement highlights the challenges faced by Pakistanis overseas and the importance of consular support in safeguarding their rights.

Authorities continue to monitor the cases of imprisoned Pakistanis and provide assistance where possible. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ensure fair treatment and legal protection for citizens facing charges abroad.
