On the eve of Independence Day, President Asif Zardari has approved a 90-day sentence reduction for selected prisoners under Article 45 of the Constitution. This reduction does not apply to individuals convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, or serious crimes such as adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism.
Eligible for the reduction are male inmates over 65 years old who have served at least one-third of their sentences. Women aged 60 and above, as well as those with children in prison, will also receive the reduction if they have served one-third of their sentences.

Inmates under 18 who have completed one-third of their imprisonment are also eligible for the reduction. This presidential clemency reflects a humanitarian approach, prioritizing elderly inmates, women with children, and juveniles, while excluding those convicted of severe crimes.
