The Punjab School Education Department has announced a new standardized dress code for teachers in all public sector schools across the province. The notification, issued on February 19, 2026, instructs all Chief Executive Officers of District Education Authorities to enforce the policy strictly, starting February 23, 2026.
Under this new regulation, teachers are required to wear a black gown during school hours while performing academic duties. The department emphasized that the gown symbolizes professionalism, academic dignity, and equality among educators. It is to be worn over modest attire that aligns with cultural, social, and ethical norms.
The notification also provides specific dress recommendations for teachers. Male teachers are encouraged to wear shalwar kameez in plain, subdued colors or a pant-shirt combination, paired with closed shoes or strapped sandals. Female teachers are advised to dress in attire that reflects dignity and respect, complemented by closed shoes or modest sandals.
School heads are responsible for ensuring daily compliance with the dress code, while Chief Executive Officers will oversee implementation at both district and school levels. The department has stressed that adherence to the dress code is a priority and must be followed meticulously.
This new initiative aims to maintain a professional and uniform appearance for teachers, promoting a sense of equality and respect within educational institutions. By standardizing attire, the department hopes to enhance the overall image of public sector schools while aligning with cultural and ethical expectations. Authorities are expected to monitor enforcement closely and ensure that the dress code is observed in both spirit and practice.
The move has been positioned as a significant step toward reinforcing discipline and professionalism in Punjab’s education system, signaling the government’s commitment to fostering a respectful and organized learning environment for students and staff alike.
