Net Metering Units Increase 28 Percent In September With Solar Growth

Pakistan’s net metering sector continued its strong growth in September 2025, with units rising 28.1% month-on-month, reflecting increased adoption of solar energy across the country. Data compiled by Arif Habib Limited from NEPRA shows that net metering is steadily gaining popularity among residential and commercial consumers.

The share of net metering in total electricity generation increased by 57 basis points compared to the same month last year. This indicates a growing trend of self-generation, where consumers rely more on rooftop solar systems while reducing dependence on the national grid.

Net metering allows households and businesses to generate their own electricity and feed excess energy back into the grid. Consumers earn credits for the surplus power, which helps offset electricity costs. The rising number of net metering installations signals a positive response to high electricity tariffs and an increasing focus on renewable energy solutions.

Overall power generation in September rose 0.8% year-on-year. Analysts note that the rapid growth in net metering units highlights the public’s interest in sustainable and cost-effective energy alternatives.

The surge in net metering also supports Pakistan’s broader renewable energy goals. Policymakers are encouraging solar adoption through incentives and streamlined procedures, enabling faster deployment of rooftop solar systems.

As energy demand grows, net metering provides a practical solution for easing pressure on the national grid. Both households and commercial sectors benefit from lower energy bills while contributing to cleaner electricity generation.
