In a dual decision, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Thursday announced divergent electricity pricing adjustments – offering significant relief for Karachi consumers while implementing a nationwide rate hike.

Karachi’s Power Bill Relief:
- Rs2.99 per unit reduction for K-Electric consumers
- Adjustment reflects March 2025 fuel costs
- Total relief worth Rs4.045 billion
- Effective in June 2025 electricity bills
- Excludes lifeline, protected domestic consumers, EV stations, and prepaid users
Nationwide Tariff Increase:
- Rs0.93 per unit hike for all other distribution companies
- Based on April 2025 fuel price variations
- Same consumer exemptions apply as Karachi
- Adjustment to appear separately in June bills
Nepra clarified the fuel charge adjustments (FCA) will be itemized separately on consumer bills based on actual monthly consumption. The regulator emphasized these are pass-through adjustments reflecting variable fuel costs rather than permanent tariff changes.
The contrasting decisions come amid ongoing power sector reforms and reflect regional variations in fuel procurement costs. While Karachi consumers will see meaningful relief, most other Pakistanis face another incremental increase in their electricity costs.
