NDMA Warns Of Heatwave In Multiple Pakistani Districts

The NDMA has issued heatwave precautions for several districts nationwide, including Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab, and Umarkot, Tharparkar, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, and Sanghar in Sindh, anticipating extreme temperatures during May and June.

Director General Mahr Sahibzad of the Pakistan Meteorological Department underscored the impact of climate change on the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, leading to elevated risks of heat-related illnesses, deaths, and environmental hazards like droughts, wildfires, and air quality deterioration.

NDMA data projects maximum temperatures of 48.1°C in May with 71.72% humidity, rising to 49.5°C in June with 82.48% humidity. July and August may witness temperatures of up to 48.5°C and 48.63°C, respectively, accompanied by high humidity levels.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded Pakistan’s highest temperature of 54°C in Turbat, Balochistan, in May 2017. While temperatures above 50°C are currently unlikely, medical experts warn of heat-related illnesses like heatstrokes, which can occur at temperatures above 40°C.

These precautions come amidst growing concerns about the adverse effects of rising temperatures, urging authorities and citizens to take preventive measures to mitigate the impact of heatwaves.
