NDMA Warns of Floods amid Heavy Rains from Aug 13

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert as heavy rains are expected across several parts of Pakistan from August 13 to 15. Authorities have warned of possible urban flooding, rising river levels, and landslides in vulnerable regions.

The NDMA spokesperson stated that water levels may rise in the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers, with low to medium floods likely at Taunsa, Guddu, Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad barrages. Medium to high flows are also forecast in streams such as Nullah Dek, Nullah Ek, Palkhu, Hadiyara, Ben, and Basantar. Tarbela Dam is currently 96% full, while Mangla Dam is at 64% capacity, increasing the risk.

In Punjab and Islamabad, heavy rainfall is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot, raising concerns of urban flooding. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, intense showers could trigger landslides and flash floods in the Kabul and Swat rivers. Gilgit-Baltistan’s Hunza, Shigar, and Ghanche districts face similar threats due to heavy rain and glacier melt.

The NDMA is closely coordinating with federal and provincial agencies for monitoring and emergency response. Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to stay alert, follow official advisories, and take preventive measures.
