In a significant development for PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has exonerated the former Prime Minister in the Toshakhana reference investigation. The anti-corruption agency submitted a report to the Accountability Court clarifying that Sharif was not involved in purchasing a vehicle from Toshakhana through a fraudulent account. According to NAB’s findings, the vehicle in question was returned to the state depository back in 1997 and was no longer owned by the government when Mr. Sharif acquired it in 2008.
This decision comes as part of broader proceedings involving multiple political figures. Earlier in the year, NAB had initiated three separate references against Nawaz Sharif alongside other prominent politicians such as Yousaf Raza Gillani and Asif Ali Zardari, covering various allegations. Additionally, references were made against Anwar Majeed and Abdul Ghani Majeed concerning the payment of taxes on luxury vehicles that were brought into the country through Toshakhana.

The scrutiny of Toshakhana transactions gained momentum following the disqualification of PTI founder Imran Khan by the Election Commission of Pakistan last year. The Toshakhana, a government repository that houses gifts given to state officials, has been at the center of several controversies, implicating high-ranking officials in potentially improper or illegal activities regarding state gifts.
