In response to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) request to expand the tax base and boost revenue, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has begun receiving data from the National Database Regulatory Authority (NADRA) regarding affluent individuals who are not paying taxes.

According to sources, NADRA has provided the FBR with information on 195,000 wealthy Pakistanis outside the tax system, including details on bank accounts, property ownership, and luxury vehicle registrations. The FBR intends to pursue these individuals for tax collection, as their extravagant lifestyles suggest significant income.

Sources indicate that there is substantial evidence that these high-income individuals are failing to meet their tax responsibilities. Earlier this month, FBR chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial stated that even the wealthiest 5 percent of the population is not filing taxes.

Following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in July to incorporate wealthy individuals into the tax system, NADRA has commenced sharing private data of affluent individuals with the FBR to implement tax regime enhancements and improve revenue for the fiscal year 2024-25.
