Murree's Snowfall Season Ends After Dry Spell, Tourism Suffers

Murree’s snowfall season has officially come to a close after an extended dry spell, marking the end of what was expected to be a busy winter season. Authorities have shut down 19 tourist facilitation centres along the Rawalpindi-Murree route, with staff members being recalled to Rawalpindi and instructed to report to their respective departments. The Civil Defence volunteers, who had been stationed in Murree to assist tourists, have also returned to Rawalpindi.

The weather in Murree has been declared “normal,” signaling the end of winter holidays for local schools and colleges, which are set to reopen on March 1. Business owners from cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad, who had heavily invested in the tourism sector, are now returning to their hometowns, facing significant financial losses due to the unexpectedly dry season. Many of these investments, worth millions, have failed to yield expected returns.

The Meteorological Department reports that while Murree will continue to experience occasional rain and light snowfall over the next month, overall weather conditions will remain stable. This year’s season saw the lowest snowfall recorded in Pakistan’s history, which resulted in a sharp decline in tourist arrivals. Many travellers, seeking snow-covered landscapes, chose alternative destinations such as Kalam, Swat, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
