Mosque Explosion in Northeast Nigerian Capital Kills Seven

An explosion ripped through a mosque in Nigeria’s northeast capital during prayer time, killing at least seven people and injuring several others. The incident occurred when worshippers had gathered for routine prayers, creating panic and chaos inside and around the mosque premises as people tried to flee the area in fear.

Local residents said the blast was powerful enough to damage parts of the mosque building and nearby structures. Windows were shattered, and debris was scattered across surrounding streets. Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion, with injured people crying for help while others rushed to assist victims before emergency services arrived.

Security officials confirmed that the explosion took place within the mosque compound, though the exact cause remains unclear. Authorities said investigations are underway to determine whether the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device or another method. Bomb disposal units and forensic teams were deployed to collect evidence from the site.

Emergency responders and ambulances reached the area shortly after the explosion. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, where several were reported to be in critical condition. Hospitals in the city were placed on high alert to handle the influx of casualties following the deadly incident.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Nigeria’s northeast region has long been affected by violence linked to militant groups, particularly Boko Haram and its splinter factions. These groups have frequently targeted civilians, religious sites, and security forces, worsening the region’s fragile security situation.

Following the blast, security across the capital was tightened, with additional checkpoints set up and patrols increased around sensitive locations. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Officials also assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to bring those responsible to justice and prevent further attacks.
