Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level security meeting on Tuesday at his residence in response to the recent attack in Pahalgam, which has intensified tensions in the region.
During the meeting, Modi granted full operational freedom to all three branches of the Indian armed forces, allowing them to take decisive action against terrorism. The meeting was attended by key defense officials, including Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh.
According to sources, Modi emphasized India’s national resolve to combat terrorism, expressing confidence in the Indian military’s capabilities. He reassured that the armed forces had the authority to decide on the timing, method, and targets for their response to the incident.
Following the security review, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Modi’s residence, where the two leaders reportedly discussed strategic issues, suggesting that the government may be planning a major response to send a strong message to those responsible for the attack.
In a show of unity, the opposition parties extended full support to the government’s plan for decisive action. Earlier, an all-party meeting had been held to brief political leaders on the situation, signaling a rare moment of consensus on the issue.
The Modi government is also taking diplomatic and strategic measures against Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack. Among the initial steps are the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, the expulsion of Pakistani nationals from India, further downgrading of diplomatic ties, and the removal of additional officials from Pakistan’s High Commission.
The heightened tensions have led to an intense series of meetings involving top ministers, senior government officials, and heads of security and intelligence agencies. Additionally, Modi is set to chair a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where key decisions and action plans regarding the Pahalgam attack are expected to be finalized.
