Met Office Forecasts Significant Increase in Smog Levels from November 6 to 8

The Punjab Environment Department has issued a ‘red alert’ for Lahore due to a significant rise in smog expected in the coming days. The Meteorological Office has predicted a noticeable increase in smog levels from November 6 to 8, leading to urgent health warnings for residents.

As of 1 PM today, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached a concerning 293, which is 42.8 times above the World Health Organization’s recommended limits, making Lahore one of the world’s most polluted cities. Certain areas in the city are facing even more severe air quality issues, with Gulberg reporting an AQI of 515, Defence Phase 8 at 424, and DHA Phase 5 at 416.

Experts warn that changing wind patterns, shifting from east to west at a speed of 4 km/h, may worsen the situation further. Medical professionals are advising citizens to limit outdoor activities and wear masks when necessary to protect against the harmful effects of poor air quality.

In response to the escalating pollution levels, the Environment Department has set up a Smog War Room dedicated to addressing various aspects of air quality management. This initiative, led by Environment DG Imran Hamid Sheikh, comprises 18 members, with officers from eight different departments reporting to it. The War Room will focus on air quality monitoring, smog forecasting, and overseeing industrial emissions and traffic management. Additionally, it includes representatives from health departments, Safe City, meteorology, and SUPARCO (Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission).
