Mayo Hospital Faces Persistent Medicine Shortage Despite CM Maryam Nawaz’s Surprise Visit
Patients at Mayo Hospital continue to endure a severe shortage of medicines, despite a surprise visit by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz aimed at addressing the crisis.
Government Intervention Fails to Ease Patient Distress
The CM’s visit had raised hopes for a resolution, yet patients and their families remain frustrated as essential medicines are still unavailable. Following the visit, the Punjab government allocated Rs340 million for medicine procurement. However, Health Minister dismissed concerns over shortages, insisting that ample stock was available.

Leadership Shake-up Amid Ongoing Crisis
In a bid to improve the situation, authorities dismissed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Medical Superintendent (MS) of Mayo Hospital. Additionally, the Punjab Health Department suspended the chief pharmacist.
Despite these high-level removals, patients are still forced to buy medicines from private pharmacies and conduct tests at private laboratories, adding to their financial burden.
Provincial Government Announces Additional Funding
To further tackle the crisis, the provincial government has also authorized funds for salaries, allowances, and vacant positions to support medicine purchases. This measure aims to stabilize hospital operations and restore essential medical services in the near future.
