A massive fire erupted on Thursday in a factory at Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone. The blaze quickly spread, causing part of the building to collapse and injuring several people.
Fire Starts in Basement, Spreads Rapidly
According to Rescue 1122 and zone officials, the fire began in the basement of a factory. It intensified rapidly and spread to nearby factories. The entire basement was soon engulfed in flames.
More than 10 fire brigade vehicles and snorkels reached the scene. However, firefighters are still struggling to control the fire due to thick smoke and intense heat.
Factory Collapse Injures Five Workers
As the fire raged, a section of the affected building collapsed. At least five workers were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Another part of the building also caved in later, though no further injuries were reported.
Rescue teams confirmed that all employees trapped inside the factory were evacuated safely. Initial reports suggested that some women were among those trapped, prompting a swift rescue response.
Nearby Factories Damaged
The blaze affected at least three surrounding factories. Several adjacent buildings also suffered partial damage. Falling debris from the collapsing factory injured a few people standing outside.
Despite the structural collapse, no deaths have been reported so far.
Rescue Operations Ongoing
Emergency teams continue to battle the fire while trying to prevent further spread. More units have been sent to the scene. Officials are focused on stopping the flames and securing the area.
The building had two interconnected units. Both sections collapsed after the basement caught fire. Rescue teams have yet to begin removing the debris.
Authorities will investigate the cause of the fire once it is fully extinguished. It is still unclear if anyone remains trapped under the rubble.
