The unnamed traveler was intercepted by customs officers while crossing from Hong Kong into Shenzhen. Upon inspection, officers discovered that the pockets of his trousers contained six canvas drawstring bags sealed with tape. The incident highlighted China’s ongoing efforts to combat animal trafficking, especially concerning non-native species. China’s biosecurity and disease control laws strictly prohibit the importation of such species without authorization. The customs authority emphasized that individuals violating these laws will face legal consequences, although it did not specify the punishment for this particular smuggler.
This incident underscores China’s heightened vigilance and enforcement against illegal wildlife trade, reflecting broader global concerns over biodiversity conservation and biosecurity.
