Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, announced that steps are being taken to begin local production of insulin in Pakistan.

He shared this update while presiding over a high-level meeting attended by Russian government representative Denis Nazarov, along with senior officials from the Ministries of Industries and Health, and the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).

The meeting discussed insulin imports from Russia, progress on pharmaceutical joint ventures, and the formulation of protocols for policy board implementation.

It was highlighted that DRAP had already approved Genetics Pharmaceuticals, Lahore, to import insulin from Russia’s Zavod Medsintez.

Haroon Akhtar Khan underscored that establishing a Pakistan-Russia pharmaceutical joint venture is a key development in enhancing bilateral cooperation. He also pointed out that, as a major consumer of insulin, Pakistan could significantly benefit from a consistent supply for its diabetic population.

A formal protocol between local firms and Russian partners is expected to be finalized and presented soon. He directed all stakeholders to prepare a detailed proposal ahead of submission to the Federal Cabinet.
