The Lahore High Court (LHC) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the government’s inadequate steps to curb the worsening smog situation across Punjab. During a hearing on Monday, the court criticized officials for failing to implement effective measures despite repeated warnings.
Justice Shahid Karim remarked that the authorities’ response was “slow and disappointing,” as air quality in Lahore continues to reach hazardous levels. He noted that the lack of coordination between departments has worsened the crisis.
The court summoned senior officials from the Punjab Environment Department and the city administration to explain why pollution control directives were not properly enforced. It also questioned the failure to monitor industrial emissions and crop burning.
Experts told the court that the smog has reached alarming levels, posing serious health risks for citizens, especially children and the elderly. Hospitals have reported a sharp rise in respiratory problems over the past few weeks.
Justice Karim directed the government to take immediate and practical action to address the situation, including strict enforcement against polluters and promotion of public awareness. He warned that negligence would no longer be tolerated.
The LHC has also sought a detailed report on smog reduction efforts by the next hearing, emphasizing that environmental protection is a constitutional duty of the state.
