Lemon Prices Surge Sharply Amid Intense Heatwave

Lemon Prices Skyrocket to Rs800/kg in Multan Amid Scorching Heat

Multan – Lemon prices witnessed a sharp and unexpected hike on Wednesday, soaring to Rs800 per kilogram, leaving consumers shocked amid the ongoing heatwave.

Traditionally used for refreshing summer drinks like lemonade, shikanjabeen, and limca, lemons have become unaffordable for many residents. Just a week ago, the citrus fruit was selling for Rs500 per kilo, but the price has now surged by Rs300, with vendors reportedly disregarding official price lists.

“I came to buy lemons, but when I heard the price was Rs800, I was stunned,” said a local resident. “My children want shikanjabeen to beat the heat, but I can’t afford lemons at this rate.”

Retailers defended the price hike, citing increased wholesale rates. “We’re buying lemons at Rs800 per kilo in the market. The official price of Rs535 is unrealistic — we’re not even getting lemons at that rate,” one shopkeeper claimed.

Citizens have urged the local administration to intervene and take strict action to regulate prices and ensure affordability as temperatures continue to soar.
