Lahore has once again been ranked as the most polluted city in the world, as air quality levels continue to deteriorate across Punjab. Karachi also made it to the list, ranking fourth among the world’s most polluted cities.
According to global air quality monitors, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached hazardous levels this week, posing serious health risks to residents. The thick layer of smog has blanketed the city, reducing visibility and worsening respiratory conditions.
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb expressed concern over the alarming pollution levels, warning that air quality deterioration could severely disrupt daily life in the province. She urged residents to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak smog hours.
Health experts have also sounded the alarm, noting that prolonged exposure to toxic air can lead to breathing difficulties, lung infections, and other serious health complications. Hospitals across Lahore have reported a rise in patients suffering from cough, sore throat, and eye irritation.
Environmental groups attribute the worsening air quality to vehicular emissions, industrial waste, and the seasonal burning of crop residue in nearby areas. Despite repeated warnings and government campaigns, the practice of stubble burning continues to contribute heavily to smog formation.
The Punjab government has announced stricter monitoring measures and is working with the Environment Protection Department (EPD) to identify high-risk areas. Schools and offices may also face temporary closures if the situation worsens further.
Earlier this week, speculation grew about possible early winter vacations for schools due to the worsening smog. Officials are considering the option to protect students’ health and prevent further exposure. Punjab schools may face early winter vacations amid smog alert, as authorities evaluate conditions and prepare contingency plans.
Meanwhile, citizens have called for urgent government action, demanding better urban planning and stricter enforcement of pollution control laws. Environmental activists stress that without sustained efforts and public awareness, Lahore’s air crisis will only worsen in the coming years.
With both Lahore and Karachi among the top five most polluted cities globally, experts emphasize the need for a long-term policy to tackle air pollution one that includes cleaner energy use, improved waste management, and public transport reforms.
