After launching the Orange Line Metro Train and electric buses, Lahore is now set to add electric trams to its public transport system. The city has received its first electric tram, imported from China, which is currently being assembled at the Ali Town depot.
Initially, the electric tram will run as a pilot project along Canal Road. The tram, fully powered by electricity, features three interconnected compartments and has the capacity to carry up to 250 passengers at a time. Officials report that it can travel approximately 25 to 27 kilometers on just a 10-minute charge, making it both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

This new tram project is part of Lahore’s broader efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions. The initiative follows the successful implementation of other eco-friendly transport systems in the city, such as the Metro Bus and the Orange Line.
Once the trial run is complete and evaluated, the tram service may be expanded to other parts of the city. The government hopes that this initiative will not only offer commuters a cleaner and more efficient travel option but also help ease traffic congestion in the city’s busiest corridors.
The move is being welcomed as a step toward modern, sustainable urban mobility in Pakistan’s second-largest city.
